A Speech and Language Therapist is somebody who is trained to help people to feel better about communicating with others. Communicating means understanding, getting your message across, and getting along with others in a way that feels OK for you.
Communication is very important as we use it for most things in our lives.
When communicating is difficult, or not working, it can stop you being happy or safe.
Speech and Language Therapists help people with lots of different support needs.
People often think they just help people who can't talk, but it's much more than that.
(speech, strokes, hearing, stammering, learning disabilities, mutism, cleft palate, physical disabilities, neurological conditions, voice problems, social communication...)
Speech and Language Therapists help people with anything about communicating, however most choose an area they find interesting and become specialists.
I am a Specialist in Autism and Mental Health.
Speech and Language Therapists are registered with an organisation called HCPC which makes sure they are working in a way that is safe and effective.
My HCPC registration number is SL28024.
Speech and Language Therapists also join an organisation called the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, who make sure they stay up to date, and ask the government to do more to help people to communicate.
My RCSLT number is RC0030029.
